Pain Management

Our Little River Veterinary Clinic Discusses Pet Pain Management and Knowing the Signs of Pain & The Pain Management Options

Pain Management

No pet parent wants to see their pet in pain, but sometimes pain is an unfortunate part of aging and/or other conditions. Pain also plays an essential role in warning your pet (as well as you) of injury or potential medical conditions. When pain management for pets is left untreated it leads to stress, immune compromise, self-mutilation and unfortunately, even deterioration. Since your pet can’t tell you where they hurt or why it is essential for you to recognize the signs of pain in your pet and to know the various treatment options available from your vet. Our Little River Veterinary Clinic in Fairfax, VA shares some helpful tips and sings to look out for.

Signs Your Pet in Fairfax is in Pain

Whether your pet has recently had surgery, has a medical condition or has sustained an injury that you weren’t aware of, knowing how your pet shows they are in pain is critical. The sooner you are aware of their pain, the sooner you can take them to the vet for pain management for pets. Some of the signs of pain in pets to be aware of include sensitivity to particular areas of their body, whining or howling, limping, change in their behavior and self-mutilation. Also be aware of:

  • Reduced appetite
  • Excessive sleeping
  • Inappropriate urinating or defecating
  • Change in the appearance of their coat

Pain Management for Pets

The type of pain management your vet recommends for your pet will depend on various things, such as the cause of the pain, your pet’s age, and their weight. For example, if your pet is experiencing pain as a symptom of arthritis, your vet may recommend weight reduction and/or joint supplements. Regular exercise is also an important part of pain management because it helps to build the muscle mass necessary to support joints. Other pain management options your vet may recommend include anti-inflammatory medications, physical rehab, massage therapy, and low-level laser therapy.  Your veterinarian may also recommend:

  • Steroidal anti-inflammatory medications, such as cortisone, which can help to temporarily reduce their pain and inflammation
  • Other medications your vet may prescribe your pet for chronic pain may include tramadol (for severe to chronic pain), amantadine (neuropathic pain), gabapentin (neuropathic pain) and/or opioids for extreme pain.
  • Neuromuscular electrical stimulation
  • Water therapy
