Keeping Pets Well with Preventive Medicine

They say the best way to treat an illness is to prevent it, which is why preemptive care is often the key to ongoing health for pets. Here at Little River Veterinary Clinic, everything we do is centered on the well-being of our patients and helping them live long, healthy lives. As a first step in prevention, we recommend annual examinations. This helps us keep track of developing conditions and ensures that your pet’s health is ongoing.

During these visits, we examine your pet from nose to tail. If we find any abnormalities, we can either recommend treatment or and/or perform additional testing. Laboratory testing is also recommended for senior pets, even if they appear healthy on the outside. The following are the various services we may perform during your pet’s comprehensive wellness exam:

  • Wellness blood work for pets over the age of 7
  • Weight check to confirm your pet is at a healthy weight (overweight pets are at a higher risk for diabetes, arthritis, and other health risks)
  • Dental cleaning (separate appointment required)
  • Blood chemistries, as appropriate
  • Diagnostic testing and allergy testing, as appropriate
  • Mobility or lameness exam
  • …and more

Disease Prevention

If you want to strengthen your pet’s safety net against diseases, we recommend that you vaccinate them and keep them on a year-round parasite preventive. For best results, it’s important that your pet’s vaccines and parasite preventives be updated on a regular basis. Vaccines strengthen your pet’s immune system against various viruses and diseases—some of which can be transferred to humans. We can customize a vaccination schedule to meet your pet’s specific needs and accommodate their lifestyle. Parasite preventives offer protection from diseases like heartworm (caused by mosquitoes), Lyme (caused by deer ticks), and flea allergy dermatitis. We carry various name-brand preventive medications at our online store, for your convenience. If you have any questions about our inventory, or if you’d like to schedule your pet’s wellness exam, give us a call at (703) 273-5110.
