Signs your Pet has Allergies

Allergies are common problems in dogs and cats. Some pets are allergic to more than one thing. Fortunately, most allergies are treatable with help from your veterinarian. Dr. Downs and our team at Little River Veterinary Clinic in Fairfax would like to look at the signs of pet allergies.

Problems with the Skin

The most common signs of pet allergies are red skin, hives, crusting, and incredibly itchy skin. The itchy sensation may be located in just a few spots or all over the body. Animals have been known to scratch themselves bald, or break the skin open to produce wounds that have difficultly healing. Dogs and cats may have chronic ear infections because they will not stop scratching their ears. Pets will constantly scratch, lick, or chew themselves.

Upper Respiratory Problems

Pets that are allergic to something in the air show unmistakable signs of upper respiratory problems like sneezing, coughing more often than usual, runny eyes, runny nose, and noisy breathing. Cats will shake their heads to clear their noses. Your pet may also start snoring.

Gastrointestinal Problems

Pets often show gastrointestinal problems along with skin problems or upper respiratory problems. However, if your pet is chronically vomiting or has constant diarrhea, the cause could be an allergy. No matter the cause, your pet should be seen by a veterinarian. The symptoms include diarrhea, vomiting, bloating, or passing more gas than usual.

Behavioral Problems

Pets often change their personalities when they are under the stress of allergy symptoms. They can become aggressive because being touched can be painful. Dogs can sometimes become hyperactive.

Warning: Do Not Give Your Pet Medicine Meant for People

Your allergy pills or eye drops will not work for your pet. They are often far too strong for your pet to handle. You do not want to end up poisoning your pet. Only give medication under the direction of your veterinarian.
