Pet Dental Care

Like people, pets need specialized care to make sure their teeth and gums are healthy and disease free. At Little River Veterinary Clinic in Fairfax, we are passionate about the overall health of your pet, including the right dental care. Below, we take a look at some frequently asked questions about pet dental care and provide the answers that you are looking for.

Why is Pet Dental Care Important?

Dental care is important for your cat or dog to make sure their teeth and gums stay healthy.  Irritated or diseased gums are a perfect site for dangerous bacteria to enter the bloodstream.  There are many diseases that can impact major organs, such as the heart and kidneys, that enter the body through the mouth. Further, if left unchecked, diseased teeth can spread to other teeth in the mouth, creating a very large and painful problem for your pet.

How Can a Veterinarian Help?

Our veterinarian is able to carefully examine all of your pet's teeth and gums during a regular dental care appointment. Your pet will be sedated with local anesthesia so that our veterinarian will have a chance to fully examine your pet's mouth and so that both your pet and our veterinarian remain safe. Plaque and tartar will be cleaned off, and any broken or diseased teeth will be removed to prevent the spread of disease throughout the rest of the animal’s body.

How Often Should My Pet Have Their Teeth Examined?

During your regular wellness exam, which should be once a year at a minimum, our veterinarian will take a quick look at your pet's teeth. At this time, our veterinarian will be able to suggest when a dental cleaning is necessary. Some pets, through proper dental care at home, do not require a cleaning every year. Talking with our veterinarian is the best way to determine the right dental care schedule for your pet.
