Laser Therapy FAQs

Little River Veterinary Clinic Answers Your Laser Therapy FAQs

Animals may develop a variety of problems that require additional therapy to speed healing. Low-level laser therapy is a new technology that stimulates the healing processes deep within the body. At Little River Veterinary Clinic in Fairfax, VA, we offer laser therapy to help heal wounds and relieve pain. Here are a few common questions our patients ask about laser therapy.

What is Laser Therapy?

Laser therapy uses a certain frequency of laser light, which causes “biomodulation”—that is, physical changes in cellular activities. These activities can help to improve healing within cell layers and to reduce pain.

What Conditions Can Laser Therapy Help?

Veterinarians generally use laser therapy to heal wounds after surgery, to heal certain types of skin conditions, and to relieve pain from arthritis or other veterinary conditions.

Is Laser Therapy Painful for My Pet?

Laser therapy is completely painless. Many animals find it relaxing and will sleep through a session.

What Happens During Laser Therapy?

Your pet will be placed on a padded table or other structure to allow our vet to access the affected area of the body. Our veterinarian will use a hand-held device that is passed over the surface of the body to stimulate the deeper layers of tissue below the skin. A session may take 10 to 20 minutes. After therapy, your pet can resume normal activities.
